Virginia Tech (2-2) vs. Miami (2-2) Game Preview

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

Third down stops have been a problem for Virginia Tech so far, but the D should get a nice break this week.

Miami can’t come up with a third down conversion.

Why are the Hurricanes struggling so much at putting points on the board? They can’t do much on the big downs, converting a nation-low 23% so far. To make this even worse, against the three FBS teams on the slate, Miami is a pathetic 6-of-34 – 18%.

And why is this happening? The Hurricane offensive line is getting destroyed by anyone with a pass rush, allowing nine tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks per game. The Virginia Tech defensive front has been hit or miss, but it came up with nine sacks over a two-game span against Old Dominion and Furman. This is the game to ramp it up.

Why Miami Will Win

The Virginia Tech secondary has been okay overall, but it just got picked apart by Duke’s Quentin Harris, and now it’s Jarren Williams’ turn.

Outside of the struggles moving the chains, the freshman has been as close to flawless as possible so far. He’s hitting 73% of his passes, averaging over 250 yards per game, averaging well over 10 yards per throw over his last two games, and he has yet to throw a pick with seven touchdown passes.

In the end, this should come down to turnover margin. For all of Miami’s various issues, it’s not giving the ball away. Meanwhile, the Hokies have given it up two times or more in all four games, including five in the opener against Boston College.

Miami has turned it over just twice all year.

What’s Going To Happen

At home, the Hurricanes will come up with a strong defensive performance along with a good-enough offensive day to get by. Rested, this should be an active, aggressive Miami squad that owns the time of possession battle and methodically rolls to the team’s first ACC win this season.
