UCLA (2-7) vs. Arizona State 5-4) Game Preview
One Reason Why UCLA Will Win
The passing game has to get going from the start to make this a shootout.
And Arizona State has to prepare for both UCLA quarterback options.
Dorian Thompson-Robinson struggled against Oregon – hitting just 9-of-23 passes – and Wilton Speight wasn’t a whole lot better, but between the two, the UCLA attack has to push the ball down the field and challenge the ASU secondary that can and will give up big plays.
Utah lost Tyler Huntley in last week’s loss to the Sun Devils, but before that, Colorado, Stanford and USC are all able to keep things moving with accurate, midrange passes. Steven Montez, KJ Costello, and USC backup Jack Sears were able to combine to complete well over 70% of their passes for close to 850 yards and six touchdowns with no picks.
Speight and Thompson-Robinson have to combine to be terrific – or, one of them has to rise up and rock.
The line has to keep the quarterbacks upright, because …
One Reason Why Arizona State Will Win
The ASU pass rush continues to be fantastic, and while the two teams have good passing games, but Arizona State’s should be better.
The Sun Devils generated three sacks on Utah last week and lived behind the line in the big win. The UCLA offensive front has been a little bit better, but it’s still way too inconsistent and isn’t good against aggressive defensive fronts.
That’s ASU.
The defense continues to bring the pressure, while the offense continues to get the passing game going with an All-America-caliber season from WR N’Keal Harry.
He’s been steadily great, and last week he blew up against the Utes with 161 yards and three scores in the win. Last year he hit the Bruins for 95 yards and a score in a loss, and he caught a touchdown pass in the win as a freshman.

What’s Going To Happen
Arizona State is pushing for bowl eligibility, and in the final home game of the year, it’ll get it.
Give Herm Edwards credit – he’s going to push through a tough schedule to come up with a sixth win when few thought he’d have a whole lot of success.
Manny Wilkins will throw better than the UCLA quarterbacks, and the offense will move the ball better and more consistently. This will come down to the lines, and ASU’s will be stronger.
