TCU (3-1) vs. Iowa State (2-2) Game Preview
Why TCU Will Win
The defense is the real deal.
It might have struggled a bit against SMU in the stunning upset loss a few weeks ago, but the team is back. It was as if a wake-up call was needed to just to show the Horned Frogs just how small the margin of error is this season, and they responded in a big way.
The Kansas offense that’s been clicking at a surprisingly high level was shut down to a dead stop, hitting just 42% of it passes and getting absolutely nothing happening down the field.
In three of the four games, TCU has held teams to under a 47% completion rate.
The defense is by far the best of any Big 12 team against the run, the secondary is clamping down on anything big, and the offense finally busted out with the passing game against the Jayhawks.
This is yet another solid Horned Frog team that’s great at capitalizing on mistakes and doesn’t screw up all that often. Iowa State’s defense doesn’t take the ball away, and the rushing offense won’t work against this TCU D, but …
Why Iowa State Will Win
The Iowa State passing attack has been fantastic.
What did SMU do against TCU that Purdue and Kansas couldn’t? Shane Buechele hit his passes, and he took the throws that were there. Buechele hit 45% for SMU in the win, and no one else so far has been able to hit 27% so far.
Iowa State QB Brock Purdy has taken over the offense that doesn’t have David Montgomery to rely on anymore, throwing for 276 yards or more in every game and flirting with a 70% completion rate. He’s taking more shots down the field and generating more big plays.
He’s the exact type of quarterback who can beat this Horned Frog secondary.
The offensive line is giving him plenty of time to work, the defense is great at getting into the backfield, and overall, the team is doing a good job of not screwing itself up – it’s third in the nation in fewest penalties.

What’s Going To Happen
TCU can play this game, especially on the road.
It has the defense and the offensive makeup to create a nice blend of balance and pop, and it’s not going to make the massive mistakes Iowa State needs.
The Cyclones lost two brutally-tight games to Iowa and Baylor, and it’s about to drop another one. The chances will be there to come through late, but the TCU defense will hold firm, the special teams will create one big play, and all of a sudden, this will look like a team that could potentially be the second-best in the Big 12.
