Michigan (0-0) vs. Middle Tennessee (0-0) Game Preview

It’s the first game of the rest of Jim Harbaugh’s life.

Winning the opener hasn’t been a given under Harbaugh – going 2-2 to kick off his campaigns in Ann Arbor – but this about more than just getting a victory. After the way last season ended – with two brutal blowouts to Ohio State and Florida – nothing short of complete and total destruction of Middle Tennessee will do.

The Blue Raiders are going to be good enough to be a factor again in the Conference USA and go bowling, but they have a wee bit of rebuilding to do.  After this, there’s still a trip to Iowa to deal with along with a date at Duke before diving into a rough start to league play.

After this, Michigan has to figure out the Army offense before going to Wisconsin.

Why Middle Tennessee Will Win

The linebackers are good enough to give the Michigan running game problems.

The Wolverines are loaded on the line, but the running back situation is going to need some time and seasoning for an offense that’s tinkering with the overall style. The Blue Raider combination of Khalil Brooks and DQ Thomas  aren’t big, but they can fly and be disruptive.

The Middle Tennessee D should once again be strong at forcing mistakes. It’s Week 1 and there will be chances to come up with turnovers if Michigan isn’t razor-sharp. The Blue Raiders were 7-0 last year before the bowl game when they forced two or more turnovers, but …

Why Michigan Will Win

Michigan was No. 1 in the Big Ten last season in fewest lost turnovers.

The Middle Tennessee defense can move and will be flying around, but six of the top ten tacklers are gone and the line is going to be a bit of an issue early on.

The spotlight will be on the Wolverine passing offense under new coordinator Josh Gattis, but to win this easily, the O line should be able to blast away and the D can take care of the rest.

The goal here is to get Shea Patterson and the talented receiving corps going to ramp up the tempo and explosion of the attack. It all gets to work against a green group of Middle Tennessee corners who’ll be under fire from the start.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s not going to make up for the way the 2018 season collapsed, but for at least one week, Michigan will look every bit the part of a dominant force ready for a massive season.

The defense will be outstanding from the start, and the offense will make up for a few too many misfires with a few home runs to put this away early.
