Illinois (3-4) vs. Purdue (2-5) Game Preview

Why Illinois Will Win

Well look at who decided to rise up and pull off the biggest upset of the college football season.

So how did the Illini do it? How did they beat Wisconsin? It helped that the Badgers just barely weren’t able to put it away, but credit the Illinois defense for being able to come up with the two late takeaways to help pull it off.

The Illini D might not be anything great, it can’t stop the run, and it’s not doing enough to get off the field with ease, but the line can get into the backfield and the group is coming up with a boatload of takeaways. It has forced two turnovers or more in every game but the loss to Eastern Michigan, and Purdue has the ability to give it up multiple times.

Best of all for the Illini and its awful run defense, Purdue can’t and won’t run the ball a lick. Illinois back Reggie Corbin has been held in check over the last few weeks, but he’s got the ability to tear off yards in chunks, gained 83 yards with a score against the Badgers, and …

Why Purdue Will Win

Purdue’s run defense hasn’t been all that bad.

It got ripped up by TCU several weeks ago, but it kept Penn State to under five yards per carry and only allowed 200 yards once so far.

The Illini passing game has some pop – QB Brandon Peters came up with a few huge throws among his nine completions against the Badgers – but it hasn’t hit the 200-yard mark in any of the last four games and is wildly inaccurate.

Wisconsin’s Jack Coan might have thrown a miserable late pick, but he also hit 75% of his passes for 264 yards and a touchdown. The Illinois secondary can get roasted, giving up three touchdowns in the four games before beating Wisconsin, and Purdue’s Jack Plummer is coming into his own.

He’s still getting his feet wet, but he followed up the 420-yard day against Maryland with 327 yards and two scores against Iowa. The Illinois offensive line isn’t all that great, the O is dead last in the Big Ten in time of possession, and it really doesn’t have the ability to keep up if the Boilermakers get up early.

What’s Going To Happen

Illinois really isn’t that great, but Purdue isn’t all that great, either.

At home, Purdue will get the passing game going well enough to keep the Illinois secondary on its heels all game long. The Illini will revert back to being the Illini, meaning they’ll have their burst to make it interesting, but won’t be able to play a full 60 minutes.

They just so happened to have that burst in the final six minutes against Wisconsin. It’ll happen earlier this week.
