5. Now THAT’S a bowl game
All you’re asking for out of a mid-December mid-range bowl game is for something interesting to happen. You want both teams to try, you want both teams to care, and you want a whole lot of suspense.
This one pulled off a thrilling final five minutes, with EMU’s Arthur Jackson coming up with his second touchdown catch of the game on a five-yard pass play, only to see it fade away.
Both teams made clutch plays, both teams managed to get pushed, and both teams deserved to win. Georgia Southern pulled this off by making big things happen in the final 3:33 – the Eagles on it; Eastern Michigan didn’t necessarily lose it.
It fit the dopey cliché that bowl backers like to use when they say, “see … don’t tell me bowl games don’t matter.” These players did exactly what they were supposed to do, and it was a blast.
