Florida vs LSU Game Preview

Why Florida Will Win

Florida needs to crank up lots and lots and lots of yards to win games.

The defense hasn’t been good enough, it’s a disaster against decent passing teams, and while things have been a wee bit better lately, this bunch doesn’t force takeaways.

Fortunately, the LSU defense should be able to oblige the request for a team that gives up lots and lots and lots of yards.

The Tigers were able to hold down Auburn and turned on the Army hanging curveball of an offense, but there wasn’t any prayer or slowing down all the things Alabama could do - and the 507 yards allowed wasn’t outside of the norm.

LSU is dead last in the SEC in third down stops - that’s a plus against a Gator offense that’s not great on money downs - and doesn’t have the pass rush to bother Graham Mertz enough to matter.

Florida is 5-1 when coming up with 349 yards or more, and 0-3 when it doesn’t. LSU gives up 407 yards per game, but …

Why LSU Will Win

Florida’s offense worked just fine last week against Arkansas and the team still lost.

The Gators might have big issues with good quarterbacks, but they really have problems with anyone who tries to run. Granted, having a mobile QB in Jayden Daniels helps - he SHOULD play despite suffering a concussion against Bama, but keep an eye out for this - but he’s hardly alone.

The LSU running game is ripping through everyone, averaging over 200 yards per game, hitting the mark in each of the last five. Florida’s run defense isn’t totally horrible - it’s a bit more about yards per carry than the bulk yards this group gives up - but the team is 1-4 when giving up more than 100 yards, 4-0 when it gives up that many or fewer, and …

Florida vs LSU Who Will Win

LSU will run for over 200 yards.

Florida will make this a fight. It’ll show a good balance, Mertz will throw for close to 300 yards, and the team will battle back after getting down fast. There will be plenty of big plays, lots of good drives, and over 800 yards in total offense.

However - assuming Daniels is a full go - LSU will push into the 40s. Florida won’t be able to keep up the pace late.
