Why BYU Will Win

How much will the Texas offense change with Maalik Murphy at the helm?

Quinn Ewers was rolling against Houston before getting knocked out with a shoulder injury, and now it’s expected to be Murphy - not Arch Manning - trying to keep the O going.

That should mean more of a reliance on the running game along with short to midrange passes. BYU’s defense has been a problem - especially against the pass - and it’s not exactly catching a break here, but it’ll be a much different game without Ewers winging it around.

What else happens with a new, young quarterback? Potentially, turnovers.

BYU’s defense might not be anything great, but it’s taking the ball away in bunches. The loss to Kansas was the only time this season it didn’t generate multiple takeaways. Last week it came up with five in the win over Texas Tech, but …

Why Texas Will Win

Texas is far more than the just the quarterback situation - and Murphy is just that talented to potentially step in and shine.

The Texas running game hasn’t been all that great, but it should be fine against a Cougar front that’s allowing over five yards per carry on a regular basis. The Longhorns don’t have to run for 200 yards - they’ve only done that once - but they should be effective.

On the other side, the BYU offense hasn’t been anything great. It can’t run, the passing attack hasn’t gone anywhere over the last few weeks, and a few early Longhorn scores should be enough to take over.

The Cougars are the worst in the Big 12 in third down conversions partly because it has the conference’s worst rushing attack. That’s not about to change this week.

BYU vs Texas Who Will Win

BYU doesn’t have Taysom Hill - he tormented former Texas teams - and Murphy will be more than fine.

The midrange passing game will be solid early on, the ground game will take over for stretches, and the idea will be to not screw up and give BYU a slew of easy chances.

The Cougars won’t go on enough good scoring marches with the Texas defensive front dominating on third down stop after third down stop. Be shocked if BYU gets anywhere near 75 rushing yards.
