OSU, UCLA, Colorado Ds: Winners & Losers
Shocker, Oklahoma is good: Big Thing
Is Georgia No. 1 now?: Overrated Thing
Louisville now a player: Underrated Thing

Quick Thoughts Oklahoma-Texas

Let that wild Oklahoma win over Texas, the Louisville victory over Notre Dame, and USC hanging on for dear life against Arizona mark the moments when the 2023 college football season officially kicks it all in.

It’s been a fun first half of the year with plenty of curveballs, some thrillers, and a blast of a time being had in Boulder, Colorado, even if it’s been more hype than production so far.

Just like this season.

Yeah, Michigan is amazing, but it helps to play a schedule full of teams fighting just to be bowl eligible.

Georgia beating Kentucky is nice, but last year’s team started out the season with an annihilation of Oregon.

This Oregon team was amazing against Colorado, but (shhhhhhhhhhh - whispering … Colorado isn’t very good) it was hardly impressive on the road at Texas Tech.

Ohio State seems close to being terrific, but it sure doesn’t feel like national title-great quite yet.

Florida State is fine, but, as it turns out, that win over an LSU team with no D is okay-not-special, and it would’ve lost at Clemson if Dabo’s kicking situation wasn’t so strange. And …

That’s been the season so far. Fine, entertaining, but there hasn’t been a whole lot of true greatness on display. That should be coming, though.

Now it’s time for Penn State to play Ohio State, and play Michigan, and for the Michigan and Ohio State build-up to start. Now we get Oregon and Washington this week. And then we get USC having to deal with those two, and Utah, and UCLA, and Notre Dame.

Now we get to see if Alabama really did pivot and can do more than just get by. as it appears to be turning into something dangerous. Now we get to see if Oklahoma and Texas can avoid a letdown in a stunningly disappointing Big 12.

We get to see a whale of an ACC race, a monster of a Sun Belt title chase - seriously, that’s probably the most interesting conference in college football - and Air Force, Fresno State, Boise State, and Wyoming battle in what should be a terrific fight for the Mountain West.

There’s an honest shot that we get a College Football Playoff of all first-timers - Penn State, USC, Texas, and North Carolina? - if the planets align correctly, or we get to see the final year of the four team format become a showdown of superpowers with CFP regulars Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan, and Oklahoma or Alabama or …

Maybe in this final year of the four-team CFP, we go right back to 2014 when it all started with Alabama, Ohio State, Florida State, and Oregon.

And we get to see if we’re about to have the second two-time Heisman winner.

The build-up is done. The second half is about to begin.
