The Coaches Poll has a fun place in the offseason college football discussion.
The AP Poll is about a cross-section of people who supposedly know the teams, have their opinions, and are speculating based on what they remember and what all the preseason preview publications are saying.
The US LBM Coaches Poll involves the - duh - coaches. It's a bit more real, only because the coaches are the ones freaking out about who they have to deal with and play.
Now, more than ever, with the transfer portal such a big part of the equation, coaches and their staffs have to be more knowledgable about the total landscape - they have to keep the talent evaluation and recruiting rolling at all times.
So what will the 2024 preseason US LBM - welcome to the sponsor - Coaches Poll Top 25 probably be? What will it look like?
Last year's poll had Georgia 1, and Michigan 2, but unlike the 2023 AP Poll, it had Alabama 3 and Ohio State 4 - the AP had them flipped.
Washington was 11, Texas 12, and when it came to the misfires, USC was 6 (finished unranked), TCU 16, Wisconsin 21, and Texas Tech 24.
But this isn't supposed to be about projecting the season. The poll is supposed to be a snapshot of how good the teams are at the moment, and then adjust.
How close were we with our Coaches Poll predictions last year? We got eight of the top 15, had all 23 teams in there in some order, and didn't have 24 or 25 - Texas Tech or Texas A&M. The goal is to get this close.
Below isn't the actual 2024 Preseason US LBM Coaches Top 25 Poll. It's our prediction of what this might be, and we'll change and tweak it come August. Now, to try thinking like a bunch of football coaches ...
