Vanderbilt at Tennessee Game Preview

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

Remember last year when Tennessee had one of the most exciting offenses in the country with tons of big plays and lots of those point things?

Yeah, the program stopped doing that - at least over the last few weeks.

This was when the O was supposed to be hitting its stride, and instead it couldn’t stop turning the ball over in a blowout loss to Missouri, and didn’t have a prayer of keeping up the pace in a blowout loss to Georgia.

Okay, fine, so it’s not like Vanderbilt is dominating the AFC Central, but the running game perked up a bit over the last few games, it’s one of the least penalized teams in the nation, and …

Why Tennessee Will Win

Yeah, Tennessee’s offense is about to have some fun.

The Vanderbilt defense isn’t getting enough from a decent pass rush. Overall the group wasn’t awful against Auburn a few weeks go, and it’s not getting hit with 50-burgers against the better teams, but that’s partly because everyone is being nice.

No, the Vol offense is nowhere near as much fun as the Hendon Hooker version, but Missouri and Georgia just so happen to be great this year. Against everyone else - throw in Bama, too - the ground game has been fantastic.

There’s a great balance to this year’s attack, Joe Milton has been good enough against everyone but the elite, and when the line is able to plow away, great things happen.

The Vols are 7-0 when running or more than 135 yards, 0-4 when running for fewer.

Vanderbilt allowed few than 135 to Hawaii and UNLV - both of the Mountain West teams threw instead. The Vols should get to 200 yards on the ground.

Vanderbilt at Tennessee Who Will Win

This hasn’t been the season Vols fans might have wanted, but here’s where everything cuts loose.

No, it might not be the 56-0 wipeout of last year, but it probably won’t be too far off, at least for the Vol offense.

The ground game will take over right away, and there won’t be any panic when Vanderbilt puts up ten in the first quarter. The Commodore defense won’t do enough to get slow down the rotation of backs as the game goes on.
