Utah State at New Mexico Game Preview

Why Utah State Will Win

One more shot.

Utah State battled to win two straight to get to five wins, got steamrolled over by Boise State last week, and now it has to pull this off to get bowling.

New Mexico’s defense pitched its best game of the season last week in a stunning 25-17 win over Fresno State, but in general there’s a problem against efficient passing teams. The bigger issue is the lack of takeaways - the Lobos aren’t forcing their own breaks.

They came up with four in the win over Hawaii, and that’s been about it with just three more takeaways spread out over the other ten games. Utah State will take the help - the biggest problem has been turnovers with lots and lots of them, giving it up multiple times in every game but two.

Why New Mexico Will Win

Who were those young go-getters who showed up in Fresno?

New Mexico was in the midst of a brutal three game losing streak with the defense failing to do anything right, and then everything worked holding Fresno State to just 229 yards of total offense.

On the other side, the offensive line that’s been just okay blasted through the Bulldogs for 345 yards. All year the run defense has been an issue, penalties have been a huge problem, and those turnovers just won’t stop.

If the Lobos can own the lines like they did last week against the Bulldogs, and if by some change they can pull off two takeaways …

Utah State at New Mexico Who Will Win

The Utah State offense makes up for its mistakes with a ton of big plays on offense.

New Mexico doesn’t have to dominate the clock and tempo, but it sort of does. It’s 2-0 when not allowing 300 yards or more, 2-7 against everyone else, one of those wins was the four-takeaway game against Hawaii, and the other was against UMass.

The Lobos will run well, but the Utah State offense will be too potent. There will be mistakes, but the Aggies will blast right though them with over 450 yards of total offense.
