USC (4-3) vs. Colorado (3-4) Game Preview

Why USC Will Win

The USC passing game is working.

Kedon Slovis stepped back in after missing the Washington game and hit Notre Dame and Arizona for well over 230 yards and four scores with no picks, helped by a line that’s giving him just enough time to survive.

The receiving corps continues to be fantastic, the running game hit the 200-yard mark in two of its last three games, and there’s just enough production to push around a Colorado defense that can’t stop a third down try and is dead last in the conference in scoring D, allowing 35 points per game.

The Buffs at least are consistent, allowing 31 points or more in every game so far, and giving up 45 to Oregon and 41 to Washington State in the last two games.

The pass defense? It’s the second-worst in college football.

Mr. Slovis is about to have some fun.

Why Colorado Will Win

Didn’t you used to be the Colorado passing game?

Like last season, the Buffs were hit by injuries, and it all but slowed the air show to a dead stop. This year, lousy weather, the Washington State defense, and the Oregon red zone D were the problems over the last two weeks, but now QB Steven Montez is back home and he has to get hot again in a real hurry.

USC is a night-and-day different team away from LA.

It helps that the road games were against Washington and Notre Dame over the past few weeks, but the Trojans are 4-0 at home – and impressive – and 0-3 on the road. Turnover margin has been the biggest problem, going -5 away from the Coliseum and being dead even at home.

Colorado needs to reboot a bit. It needs the defense to make up for its massive deficiencies with a few big plays, the run defense has to hold up and force Slovis to press, and there has to be some semblance of a pass rush. However …

What’s Going To Happen

Colorado is dead last in college football in tackles for loss, and there isn’t enough of a steady pass rush to make a big difference.

But it’s a funky Friday night game in Boulder, and the Buffs are desperate – the season is effectively over with a loss. They’re going to play like it, the offense will bomb away and push the Trojan secondary, and …

The Colorado defense will get ripped apart again.

USC won’t win in a walk, but it’ll take care of the fight early in the fourth. Colorado will take on a few late scores to make a few people out there care.
