Texas A&M (5-3) vs. UTSA (3-4) Game Preview

Why UTSA Will Win

Just how much is Texas A&M looking ahead to its week off?

The only way this works for the Roadrunners is if the Aggies are unfocused and gassed. They’ve had time off a few weeks ago before the Alabama game, but these are the dog days. With two weeks to rest up for the finishing kick of  South Carolina, at Georgia and at LSU, this isn’t likely to be the team’s sharpest performance.

The UTSA secondary will give up yards, but it’s not getting gouged. It has yet to allow a 300-yard game, and it’s not all that bad at getting off the field on third downs. The defensive line trio of Jaylon Haynes, DeQuarius Henry, and Jarrod Carter-McLin is dangerous enough to get behind the line and be a pain.

Why Texas A&M Will Win

UTSA isn’t big on the whole scoring thing.

The offense was fine against a winless Rice team and a miserable UTEP squad, but agains the four decent teams on the slate, there was a big, big problem – the Roadrunners failed to score more than 14 points in any of the four games.

There’s absolutely no downfield passing attack for the Aggie secondary to worry about. UTSA has one of the nation’s worst passing attacks – averaging a college football-worst 8.38 yards per completion – and the running game isn’t consistent enough to make up for it.

As long as the Aggies can come up with a few early scores, there shouldn’t be any concerns. There’s no ability for UTSA to mount any sort of a comeback or keep up any sort of pace.

What’s Going To Happen

Don’t expect the Aggies to suffer too much of a lapse. The last thing they want as a program is to have two weeks off to deal with the whole bowl eligibility question, and they’ll take care of that by the end of the first quarter. UTSA will be plucky enough to put up a few point, but there won’t be enough offense to make this much of a fight.
