Oregon State enjoyed just three ten-win seasons in its long history. Jonathan Smith quarterbacked one of them (2000), and last year he was the head coach of another.
Succeeding at Oregon State is hardly a given. Out of the 105 years of playing college football, the program has just 42 winning seasons. (By the way, by comparison, Oregon has 60, Washington 74, and USC 81.)
So what Smith is doing is not only working, it appears to be developing a new culture of football in Corvallis. There’s a style and branding happening here, and it’s not necessarily around a high-flying offense.
There’s a toughness to this team, with a defense that led the Pac-12, an offensive line that pounded away and was among the best in the conference at keeping defenses out of the backfield, and the coaching is working. Smith has been everything the program could've hoped for out of one of its favorite sons.
Now, after last year's success, here comes the big test with a slew of key parts gone on defense. Is it about the system on both sides as much as the players, and just how much does experience matter?
