Why Rhode Island Will Win

The Ram passing game has enough firepower to be dangerous.

Former Maryland QB Kasim Hill and veteran receiver Kahtero Summers have the potential to be a big, big problem for a Georgia State pass defense that has a long way to go to be merely decent after a rocky 2022.

The big plays should be there on offense against a Panther D that allowed 31 points per game last season, linebacker Evan Stewart is back for one of the best pass rushes in the FCS - the Georgia State offensive line wasn’t great in pass protection and needs the rebuilt group to be solid right away - and there can’t be a slew of mistakes. The penalties and turnovers that were an issue for Georgia State can’t reemerge in Week 1.

Why Georgia State Will Win

The Georgia State offense won’t have too much of a problem moving the ball.

The Rhode Island pass rush will be good, but the balance of the Panther attack should keep everything moving with what should be a devastating passing game - the receiving corps is terrific - along with a good enough group of backs to take the pressure off QB Darren Grainger.

For all the problems and concerns defensively, the transfer portal should help the line, new defensive coordinator Chad Staggs has a good linebacking corps to work with, and overall, the D should be better.

Georgia State vs Rhode Island Who Will Win

This should be a more interesting fight than Georgia State might like.

It’s the program’s first game against an FCS team since slipping past Furman 48-42 in 2019, and Rhode Island offensively should make this every bit the same sort of fight.

Georgia State’s offense will be stronger on the ground, and Grainger should be too good in the second half to let this slip away. It’s not going to be easy, though.
