Georgia State Panthers Key To The Season
Stop teams from completing passes. For the most part the run defense was great. There were a few massive blips, but that wasn’t nearly as big a problem as the secondary allowing too many midrange throws to work.
The Panthers were 4-2 when allowing teams to hit fewer than 62% of their passes, and 0-6 when allowing them to connect more. That wasn’t quite as severe in previous years - 1-9 when allowing 67% or more and 20-6 when allowing fewer in from 2019 to 2021 - but it still holds. Stop the completions.
Georgia State Panthers Top Transfer, Biggest Loss
WR Jacari Carter in from Merrimack, S Antavious Lane gone to North Carolina. Lane might not be all that big, but he’s a baller of a safety and was one of the few bright spots for the pass defense last year. Now he’s a Tar Heel after making 223 tackles with 11 picks and 13 tackles for loss over the last three seasons.
Carter might instantly be the team’s most dangerous playmaker. It took a year to get going at Merrimack, and then he blew up with 120 catches for close to 1,200 yards and 13 touchdowns over the last two seasons, and he can serve as a big-time return man.
Georgia State Panthers Key Player
Kevin Swint, LB Sr. The 6-3, 242-pounder wasn’t a massive recruit for Clemson, but he didn’t find a niche with 21 tackles with three tackles for loss in three seasons. Part outside linebacker, part defensive end, the team needs him to be a productive pass rusher no matter where he lines up.
Georgia State Panthers Key Game
at Coastal Carolina, Sept. 23. It’s not like the Sun Belt schedule eases up after the conference opener, so Georgia State might as well get a win out of the way early with a big tone-setting moment.
The Panthers are 3-3 against the Chanticleers, handing them one of their two losses in 2021 only to get dropkicked 41-24 at home last year. One quirk about this - the road team has won all six times in the series.

Georgia State Panthers Season Prediction, Win Total, What Will Happen
Set The Win Total At: 5.5
Can the Panthers avoid giving away any winnable games? Can they take home just a few close battles? Can they handle a nasty Sun Belt slate that doesn’t have a 100% rock-solid sure-thing victory?
They have to be able take down Rhode Island and UConn to start the season, and beating Charlotte would be a huge help to take the pressure off early. And why?
At Coastal Carolina, Troy, Marshall, at Louisiana, at Georgia Southern, James Madison, Appalachian State. Where will the Panthers be favored in any of those games? Maybe Marshall, possible JMU, but they’re all 50/50 fights at best.
Oh, and it gets worse - there’s no Arkansas State, Texas State, or ULM on the slate, but there is a mid-November trip to LSU.
They’ll find a way to get to five wins against this bunch, but it should all come down to a road trip at Old Dominion in the regular season finale to get to six wins and a bowl.
