Colorado (3-5) vs. UCLA (3-5) Game Preview

Why Colorado Will Win

Can Colorado keep its head up after the depressing loss to USC? The passing game still works, and it has the ability to bomb away against a UCLA secondary that’s getting destroyed by anyone who can throw a forward pass.

The Bruins were able to stop a depleted Stanford passing game, but Oregon State’s Jake Luton went off for five touchdown passes, Jayden Samuels threw for three scores last week for Arizona State, and now it’s Steven Montez’s turn.

Laviska Shenault finally went Laviska Shenault in the loss to USC – catching nine passes for 172 yards and a score – and the rest of the Buff receiving corps can and should go off. Montez hasn’t been consistent, but he blew off a few rough games with six picks in the losses to Oregon and Washington State with the great day against USC.

Colorado will throw for 300 yards getting off the bus, but …

Why UCLA Will Win

The UCLA running game will control the game.

The Buff run defense hasn’t been all that bad, but it’s about to run into and get run through by one of the nation’s hottest backs.

Joshua Kelley has rushed for 120 yards or more in three of the last four games, crushing Stanford for 176 yards and a score and following it up with 164 yards and four touchdowns last week against Arizona State.

Last year, the Colorado game was the start of Kelley’s run to a massive season, coming up with his first 100-yard day – running 12 times for 124 yards – in the loss.

It’s not that a switch has been flipped fully to the on position, but all of a sudden, the offense really is working. There are points – remember, the Bruins scored 14 in each of their first three games, and 17 against Arizona – and there are real drives. As silly as this might sound …

What’s Going To Happen

UCLA is trending upward, and Colorado can’t seem to get out of its own way.

It’s a small sample size, but over the last two weeks, the Bruins are figuring out how to win games against struggling teams – beating Stanford and Arizona State – and the Buffs have figured out how to drop games in various ways over their four-game losing streak.

UCLA might be that team that breaks your heart hard just when you think something special might be happening, but Kelley is on, the defense is coming up with just enough stops to get by, and as crazy as this might seem …

Chip Kelly’s team is a win away from being able to really and truly being able to talk about possibly going bowling.
