College Football Playoff Sugar Bowl: Notre Dame vs. Georgia Postponed to Thursday
Sugar Bowl Delayed 24 Hours
The 2025 College Football Playoff Quarterfinal between Notre Dame and Georgia will be delayed at least until Thursday night following the horrific attack in New Orleans on New Year’s Eve that killed 15 people and injured more than 35.
WDSU - the NBC news affiliate in New Orleans - was the first to report that Sugar Bowl officials were looking to delay the game, and it was later confirmed by the WSB-TV in Atlanta.
Originally, the idea was that the game would be moved from Wednesday to Thursday night - there was a second security sweep of the stadium using bomb-sniffing dogs - and then ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that there was “no official date" set. That was later changed to Thursday.
The winner of the Allstate Sugar Bowl will play Penn State in the Capital One Orange Bowl on January 9th in Miami. From purely a football and logistical standpoint, the game can’t be delayed too much longer than Thursday. There’s been no talk or hint of discussion about moving the game to another site.
