Buffalo Bulls College Football Preview 2021: Defense
– New head coach Maurice Linguist knows defense, and he’s inheriting a group with plenty of good parts. The D led the MAC allowing 359 yards and 22 points per game. The pass rush was good, the run D was okay, and the secondary was good enough – now the DBs should be a major plus.
– Linguist isn’t just a good defensive coach, he’s an NFL secondary coach coming over from the Cowboys. Three starters are back in the secondary around the safety tandem of Cory Gross and Tyrone Hill – they were second and fourth on the team in tackles, respectively, and corner Isaiah King is a decent tackler who has to come up with more broken up passes.
– The linebacking corps has one of the best in the MAC in leading tackler James Patterson, and 2019 All-MAC tackler Kadofi Wright is back for a super-senior season on the outside.
The defensive front loses 325-pound Eddie Wilson to Kansas – he was the bulk in the interior – but George Wolo is a promising inside force who can get into the backfield and Eric Black tied Wolo for second on the team with three sacks. There might not be a whole lot of bulk, but there’s some decent depth to play around with the lineup.
