Washington Huskies College Football Preview 2021: Defense
– Head man Jimmy Lake is an elite defensive coach, and his coordinator Bob Gregory has been around the program long enough to know how to make this work. They’ve got the pieces in place to make the Pac-12’s No. 1 defense even tougher.
– The linebackers are fantastic. Hybrid playmaker Zion Tupuola-Fetui is a devastating all-star pass rusher who came up with seven sacks in just four games, and he’s hardly alone.
Junior Edefuan Ulofoshio is a 240-pound rock on the inside – leading the team with 47 tackles – and second-leading tackler Jackson Sirmon and 280-pound hybrid Ryan Bowman have all-star potential.
It helps to work behind a strong line, The Huskies use their giant outside linebackers as defensive ends and generally use two defensive tackles with 300-pounders holding firm. 330-pound Sam Taimani, 310-pound Tuli Letuligasenoa and 310-pound Faatui Tuitele will work in a rotation.
– The secondary loses heart-and-soul playmaker Elijah Molden, but it’s still going to be solid. Trent McDuffie and Kyler Gordon are great-tackling corners, and Asa Turner is a 6-3, 210-pound hitter who should be the leader of a good group of safeties. Bringing in Brendan Radley-Hiles from Oklahoma is a huge help.
