Tulsa Golden Hurricane College Football Preview 2021: Keys To The Season
Tulsa Golden Hurricane Biggest Key: Offense
The turnovers have to slow down. The offense could stand to be a bit more explosive, and it’s going to need more from the passing attack without Zach Smith around, but no matter what the mistakes have to stop.
Tulsa was able to do just fine even with the mistakes, but it turned the ball over 18 times – Smith had a lot to do with that – with multiple giveaways in five of the last six games and six times in all. The team was only on the plus side of the turnover margin once.
Tulsa Golden Hurricane Biggest Key: Defense
Keep the production going without Zaven Collins. Of course the Tulsa defense was more than just one guy in its great 2020 season, but Collins came up with the massive plays at the right times to make it a special run.
All he did was pick off four passes with two going for scores – saving the day against Tulane – to go along with four sacks, 11.5 tackles for loss, and a forced fumble.
Tulsa needs everyone else to step up.
There has to be a steadier pass rush – a bulk of the sacks came in four games – and there were a few times when the pass D struggled against the bombers, but it was a brilliant year. Now the rest of the Golden Hurricane defenders have to pick up the slack for the main guy.
Tulsa Golden Hurricane Key Player To A Successful Season
QB Davis Brin, Jr
Or Seth Boomer. They both got in a little work last year in place of Zach Smith, and now they have to battle it out in fall camp to take over the veteran attack.
All the linemen are there, the backfield is better with Shamari Brooks back, and the receiving corps is full of experience. As tough as it might be to lose Smith, he threw a ton of picks, didn’t add any rushing element, and he failed to hit 50% of his passes in three of the last four games.
It’s possible for Brin or Boomer to do more.
Tulsa Golden Hurricane Key Game To The 2021 Season
Houston, Oct. 1
It’s just this simple – Tulsa almost certainly can’t and won’t be a factor in the conference title race if it starts 0-1.
It’s the AAC opener for the Golden Hurricane, and it starts a run of three home games in the first four dates. With the month of November going the other way with there road games in four, there can’t be any misfires at home.
However, Tulsa will have to buck a trend after losing five of its last six to the Cougars.
