North Texas Mean Green College Football Preview 2021: Defense
– Okay, Phil Bennett, good luck with this. The longtime defensive coordinator is back in the mix after being out of the game for the last few years, previously working at Arizona State and at Baylor and Pitt as the DC after being SMU’s head coach for six years. Now he gets to deal with the worst defense in college football.
North Texas gave up a college football-high 522 yards and 43 points per game. The pass defense was bad, the run D worse, but there’s a whole lot of experience back.
– There are good parts in place to build this back up. The pass rush wasn’t great, but it’s okay with a line that works around 315-pound Dion Norvell, an All-Conference USA tackle and a true anchor. The defensive end combination of Grayson and Gabriel Murphy is big, young, and with a ton of upside.
Leading tackler KD Davis is back after coming up with 75 tackles with three sacks. Tyreke Davis missed a chunk of the season he’s a good one on the strongside, and Larry Nixon was third on the team with 53 tackles. Now they all have to do more against the run.
– The alignment will be played around with, but more often than not expect five defensive backs around the good-tackling safety tandem of Makyle Sanders and DeShawn Gaddie. The corners have to make more big plays, but there are plenty of options to choose from in a rotation around veteran John Davis.
