Mississippi State Bulldogs College Football Preview 2021: Defense

– Considering the offense couldn’t get off the field fast enough, and it put the team in a ton of bad spots with turnovers, the Mississippi State defense had a better season than it got credit for.

It wasn’t a brick wall, but it was okay against the run, was decent at taking the ball away, and it usually held up just enough to at least give the team a shot. Now with seven starters returning, this should be a sneaky-good group that could surprise if the offense can help by not turning it over 25 times.

The Bulldogs will work around a few terrific linebackers who made a whole lot of plays behind the line. Leading tackler Erron Thompson will be sorely missed, but there’s size and plenty of options to work with.

Tyrus Wheat made just 30 tackles in nine games, but the 260-pounder led the team with five sacks. Aaron Brule is a 230-pounder who led the team with 8.5 tackles for loss and was second with 77 tackles.

The defensive front three doesn’t have any sure-thing stars, but it’s big, it has 300-pound junior Jaden Crumedy back on the nose, and it’s getting a terrific pass rusher in Randy Charlton from UCF.

The secondary is going to be a thing with a whole lot of key parts back. CBEmmanuel Forbes was one of the team’s biggest bright spots with five picks, Martin Emerson has all-star upside at one corner – he can tackle – and ready to go is Jalen Green from Texas, a versatile option who can work at corner but will end up at safety.
