NFL Draft Cornerback Rankings 2021: From The College Perspective

2. Caleb Farley, Virginia Tech

Size: 6-2, 197

The Good: The all-around measurables are everything you could want.

He’s big, but he moves like a smallish-quick defensive back. He’s fast enough to hang with any freakish NFL receiver – he’s been timed at under 4.3 – and best of all, he’s just getting started.

Originally he was supposed to be a wide receiver when he came to Virginia Tech, and he’s still learning how to be an elite defensive back. He wasn’t bad for a newbie, making 56 tackles with six interceptions and 19 broken up passes in two years.

At the very least, throw him out there and tell him to push around NFL receivers and keep up in coverage, and he’ll do that until he gets the finer points down. But …

The Not-So-Good: He still has to get the finer points down.

There’s no debate that opting out of the 2020 season was the right move – he was already projected to be a high first round pick and he had family COVID concerns – but he could’ve used that one extra year and more games to keep working on all of the finer points.

Everything is fine, but there’s always a concern whenever you’re missing time because of a back issue. There’s no real worry there, and he’s well past the knee injury suffered early in college, but it would’ve been nice if he was 100% after not playing for a year.

NFL Draft College Perspective Thought: When he actually learns how to play defensive back at an NFL level, he’s going to completely erase No. 1 wide receivers. He’s got a ridiculous skill set, he works his tail off, and again, he was fantastic considering he was playing at a high Power Five and learning on the fly. He might not be quite as ready to be a superstar on Day One as some of the other top corners, but he’ll get there.

Projected Round: First
