Ohio State vs Alabama 10 thoughts, live updates, reactions: 3rd Quarter
Third Quarter Reaction, Alabama 45-24
Alabama can’t be stopped. Ohio State gave it a run for a few minutes out of the locker room, but the defense couldn’t take advantage of DeVonta Smith being out, Justin Fields isn’t remotely close to 100%, and Mac Jones is dealing. Bama is on the doorstep to another score and a College Football Playoff National Championship.
Boom, boom, boom … :14
DeVonta Smith is back, Jones kept on throwing darts, and the offense kept on rumbling. Now the offense is in range of scoring again and making the ugly in what should be celebration of a seventh national title for Nick Saban throughout the fourth quarter.
Annnnnnd there goes that, 1:02
Justin Fields had the first down there for the taking, but he went into the slide instead of bursting for it. He’s obviously hurting, but that was a big moment the team needed to keep this all moving. The Buckeyes failed on third down, and Bama’s Christian Barmore ripped through for a fourth down stop, and that’s it.
Ohio State has to keep pressing – obviously, 2:52
There’s no way the Buckeye defense comes up with enough stops to hold serve, but Bama isn’t going to take many big chances defensively. Fields has to march the O down quickly, get a TD, make it a 14-point game again, and get to the 4th quarter, and take the chance on something crazy happening.
Justin Fields sliding before getting the first down doesn’t help as the clock keeps rolling.
Ohio State isn’t getting the stop, Alabama 45-24, 2:50
Brian Robinson is a good back, the Bama offensive line is in a lather, and the machine keeps on going.
Jones finds Slade Bolden coming across the field, Shaun Wade was out of position, and the Alabama Crimson Tide have just won the national title.
Mac Jones continues to be outstanding, 5:20
DeVonta Smith is in the locker room, and the Bama isn’t quite as explosive and rolling in the second half so far, but Jones is making things move with good decisions and nice touch. He’s now up to 422 yards and four touchdowns, and he’s having to spread the ball around. The offense keeps moving.
DeVonta Smith is still in the tent, 6:44
It’s not like the Tide don’t have weapons, and a hobbling Jaylen Waddle is giving it a shot, but the OSU D has to take advantage of No. 6 on the sidelines. This is also the Najee Harris off series. Brian Robinson is a good back, but … Smith is going to the locker room.
And there’s Justin Fields. Alabama 38-24, 6:45
Well hello, Mr. Fields. Good of you to join us.
Fields took off for a 33-yard run, came up with a few nice throws, and found Garrett Wilson for a touchdown to pull within 14, and now at least this has become interesting. NOW the Ohio State defense has to get off the field fast. Even when the Bama drives haven’t worked, they’ve been grinding.
Okay, the Buckeyes got out alive, 11:30
Going for the field goal was the textbook play, but it kept Ohio State from getting buried. Now the spark has to be there. Now the offense has to go on an efficient scoring drive, it has to wake up from the doldrums, and it needs a touchdown. Fast.
Ohio State has to come up with a quick stop, and … Alabama 38-17, 11:52
So much for that. Ohio State had so generate a quick three-and-out, battle back into this, and show that there’s an adjustment being made to slow down the machine. DeVonta Smith got knocked to the sidelines with an arm injury, and Mac Jones went boom, boom, boom, boom and kept the whole thing going. Sort of. The field goal was nice, but Bama should’ve gone for the kill shot and finished this off.
