4. The Really Big Thing Was …
It wasn’t all perfect for the Sun Belt.
There was that Texas State loss to UTSA, but for the second straight game – despite being 0-2 – the program looked and played like it’s headed in the right direction with a fun team and improved offense. That loss hurt, and ULM got rolled by Army 37-7.
Yeah, Georgia Southern needed everything in the bag to get by Campbell – an FCS team – but the Eagles were without over 30 players, hung in there, and pulled out the 27-26 win.
Yeah, South Alabama lost to Tulane 27-24 in gut-wrenching fashion, but it played well, looked great for three quarters against a better team, and considering the problems of last year, took a strong step forward overall.
That was about it for the negatives in what has to go down as the greatest Saturday in Sun Belt football history.
It should say something that Appalachian State’s 35-20 win over Charlotte was slightly disappointing.
Arkansas State could’ve and should’ve been knocked out by Kansas State several times, but it kept pushing, hung in there, and pulled off a whale of a 35-31 win at Kansas State.
Right around when that was happening, Louisiana straight up played better and was better than Iowa State in a 31-14 win.
And then, even though Kansas had all day to get pumped up and prepared for its game against a Sun Belt team – as it was seeing what was happening – it still came out flat, slow, and bad against a Coastal Carolina team that flew around and dominated in a 38-23 win.
Sun Belt 3, Big 12 0.
