Houston Season Grade: D
Welllllllll, the team lost three of its first four games, suffered a brutal gut-punch defeat to Tulane, lost superstar QB D’Eriq King to – eventually – the transfer portal, and beat one FCS program and three teams that didn’t go bowling. It can only go up in Year Two of the Dana Holgorsen era.
Memphis Season Grade: A
The Tigers finally got over the hump. They got the job done in two home games against Cincinnati to win the American Athletic Conference title, got the Group of Five spot in the New Year Six, and put up some big numbers in a Cotton Bowl loss to Penn State despite the loss of head coach Mike Norvell to Florida State. There might have been a close road loss to Temple, but overall, it was still one of the program’s best seasons ever.
Navy Season Grade: A
From 3-10 to 11-2? How’s that for an amazing turnaround in one year with everything working in a fun campaign. The Midshipmen beat Air Force, whacked Army, and only lost to AAC Champion Memphis and to Notre Dame – both losses were on the road. Throw in the Liberty Bowl win over Kansas State, and it was one of 2019’s biggest stunners.
SMU Season Grade: B+
Try to forget how the season ended. Losing three of the last five games stunk, and getting destroyed by Florida Atlantic in the Boca Raton Bowl was embarrassing, but the two other losses were to Memphis and Navy – both teams combined for 23 wins – and an 8-0 start with a win over TCU made SMU a national thing. It was a ten-win season and one of the program’s strongest campaigns in decades.
Tulane Season Grade: B-
It would’ve been nice to come up with a stronger second half of the season – the Green Wave lost five of their last six regular season games – but an Armed Forces Bowl win over Southern Miss helped make everything better. There weren’t any fantastic wins, but it was another winning season under Willie Fritz.
Tulsa Season Grade: C
The 4-8 record doesn’t look good, but the Golden Hurricane beat UCF and Wyoming, closed out with a blowout road win over East Carolina, and lost to all of the teams they were supposed to. The home loss to Houston was the one that should’ve gone the other way, but the schedule turned out to be rough, and the team wasn’t all that bad.
