Arkansas State Season Grade: B
All things considered after the horrible offseason start – head coach Blake Anderson lost his wife – the team was able to rally late, go to a bowl, and beat FIU in the Camellia. This was a good enough team to make a bigger push for the Sun Belt title – especially with no Appalachian State on the slate – but on the field, the campaign went like it was supposed to.
Louisiana Season Grade: A-
The Ragin’ Cajuns put together something special with an 11-win campaign, a trip to the Sun Belt title, and with two of the three losses coming to an outstanding Appalachian State team. They beat MAC champion Miami University in the Mobile Alabama Bowl, winning 11 of their last 13 games against everyone but ASU.
South Alabama Season Grade: D+
It wasn’t how Year Two was supposed to go under Steve Campbell. The win over Arkansas State to close out the regular season was something, but that was the only victory over an FBS team. The team wasn’t supposed to do a whole lot else, but there were enough winnable games to do more than go 2-10.
Texas State Season Grade: C-
It’s going to take a while to turn this around. The Bobcats were a wee bit better than expected in Jake Spavital’s first season – beating bowl bound Georgia State was nice – but losing six of the last seven games with a sputtering offense was rough.
ULM Season Grade: C+
It was a wee bit better a season than expected, but with bowl eligiblity on the line, the Warhawks not only lost, they lost to rival Louisiana in a 31-30 heartbreaker. They didn’t win two games in a row and couldn’t get enough out of the defense on a consistent basis.
