Arizona Season Grade: D+
This was when the Kevin Sumlin era was supposed to kick in and be at least more fun. Instead, the season started out with a loss to Hawaii, ended with a loss to Arizona State, and after a 4-1 start there was a seven-game losing streak to close things out with all seven by ten points or more.
Arizona State Season Grade: B
It was a struggle at times, but the Sun Devils found their way to eight wins with a stunning finish over Michigan State, a crazy win over Oregon, and another win over rival Arizona. Throw in the Sun Bowl victory over Florida State – as ugly as that was – and the season turned out to be a success despite a four-game second-half losing streak.
Colorado Season Grade: C+
It wasn’t a bad first season under Mel Tucker, but it was also a season of close-but-not-quite. The Buffs were close to going bowling, but they weren’t quite there with a blowout loss at UCLA and unforgivable home loss to Arizona hurting the cause. They were close to beating USC, but couldn’t quite get it done. They did beat Washington and Nebraska, but that wasn’t quite enough.
UCLA Season Grade: D+
No. Just … no. The Bruins might have had a rough slate with a whole slew of nasty games like Oklahoma and Utah to deal with, but losing to Arizona and Oregon State wasn’t okay. The offense fell flat way too often, there wasn’t any consistency, and the defense was awful way too often. Things are supposed to be a whole lot better than this under Chip Kelly.
USC Season Grade: B
By most standards, this was a nice year after missing out on a bowl in a 2018 losing campaign. But it’s USC – the team is supposed to be a whole lot stronger than this. To be fair, losing starting QB JT Daniels early on changed things up, but the passing game was fantastic under Kedon Slovis. Just when everything started to look up with five wins in six games, the Trojans got rocked by Iowa in the Holiday.
Utah Season Grade: A-
It’s way too easy to focus on the disastrous finish. There weren’t any wins over teams in the CFP top 25, and the loss at USC early on was a moment, but all the Utes had to do was beat Oregon in the Pac-12 Championship and they had a great shot at making the playoff. They got shoved around in a blowout loss, and then got ripped up by a mediocre Texas team in the Alamo Bowl. Even so, 11 wins, a second straight appearance in the Pac-12 title game, and realistic playoff discussion. It was a great year.
