MAC Season Grade: C
The league was totally mediocre. Akron and Bowling Green was awful, and the other ten teams were about the same. There were some wonderful stories with Kent State rising up, Miami winning the MAC title, and Central Michigan undergoing a major turnaround, but overall the conference was just okay. There wasn’t a killer or two like the other four Power Five conferences enjoyed.
Akron Season Grade: F
It was a rough first season under head coach Tom Arth. The Zips scored seven points or fewer seven times, lost on the road to a miserable UMass team, and finished the year as the nation’s only winless team.
Bowling Green Season Grade: C-
There were a few moments. The Falcons were great in Scot Loeffler’s first season, but they got three wins, and … they got three wins. They were annihilated in the nine losses – the closest game was 18 points – with an offense that scored 20 points or fewer nine times. However, the grade isn’t hammered because they were what we thought they’d be.
Buffalo Season Grade: B
Don’t focus on the negatives. There was an unforgivable collapse to Kent State that cost UB a shot at the MAC title, and the blowout loss to Liberty wasn’t okay, but considering all the massive personnel losses, to rebound with an eight-win season with a dominant Bahamas Bowl win over Charlotte was great.
Kent State Season Grade: A-
Kaboom. It took an all-timer of a late comeback against Buffalo with every possible thing go right, but that sparked a four-game winning streak to close the year with a winning season and the program’s first ever bowl win. It was as much fun as Kent State could’ve had without winning the MAC Championship.
Miami University Season Grade: A-
The RedHawks won the MAC Championship. So they lost the Mobile Alabama Bowl to Louisiana, and who cares that there was a strange blowout loss to Ball State? They won five of their last six regular season games to get to Detroit, and they pulled off the title win – that’s everything.
Ohio Season Grade: B-
In a mediocre year for the MAC as a whole, and with the East there for the taking, the Bobcats lost a Wednesday night game at home to Miami University, and they dropped another home date against a bad Northern Illinois squad. All three MAC losses on the year were by three points each, but it was still a disappointing year – they should’ve won the East. They did, though, win the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl over Nevada with ease.
