Pac-12 Bowl Grades
Pac-12 Bowl Grade: B-
The league got the one win it really had to have with Oregon taking the Rose Bowl over Wisconsin, but Utah’s total clunker against Texas in the Alamo and USC’s disaster against Iowa hurt. It was a 4-3 Pac-12 bowl season with Washington State getting beat by double-digits to Air Force in the Cheez-It, and Arizona State struggling against a mediocre Florida State in the Tony the Tiger didn’t help.
Arizona State Bowl Grade: B
Final Score: Arizona State 20, Florida State 14
Line: Arizona State -4, o/u: 54.5
– 5 Thoughts on the Sun Bowl
The Sun Devils didn’t have RB Eno Benjamin, and the offense sputtered and coughed, but they got the job done with takeaways from the D overcoming the shaky O for the first bowl win under Herm Edwards.
Cal Bowl Grade: A-
Final Score: Cal 35, Illinois 20
Line: Cal -6.5, o/u: 47.5
– 5 Thoughts on the Redbox Bowl
The only disappointment was the wondering about what might have happened if QB Chase Garbers was healthy all year. He threw four touchdown passes, Christopher Brown ran for 120 yards, and after getting down early, the team turned it on. No turnover, just five penalties, and again, an O that worked – it was a strong performance over a Big Ten team.
Oregon Bowl Grade: A-
Final Score: Oregon 28, Wisconsin 27
Line: Wisconsin -3, o/u: 50.5
– 5 Thoughts on the Rose Bowl
How the heck did the Ducks actually win this? The offense didn’t work, the defense couldn’t get off the field, and … four takeaways. They tried to get physical like they did against Utah, that totally flopped, and it took a few dashes from Justin Herbert to pull this off … who cares? A Rose Bowl win is a Rose Bowl win.
USC Bowl Grade: C-
Final Score: Iowa 49, USC 24
Line: USC -1.5, o/u: 54
– 5 Thoughts on the Holiday Bowl
Really, USC? This was supposed to be the game when the program was going to take a big step forward by showing that everything was fine under Clay Helton, and … yeeeeeuck. The lines were beaten up, the running game finished with just 22 yards, and the team was -3 in turnover margin. When it was Game On time down four late in the third, it gave up 21 unanswered points.
Utah Bowl Grade: D-
Final Score: Texas 38, Utah 10
Line: Utah -6.5, o/u: 55
– 5 Thoughts on the Alamo Bowl
After a massive clunker in the Pac-12 Championship, the Utes got their shot on a big stage to bounce back and end the season with a great performance to finish with a 12-win season, and they didn’t get off the bus. This was a mediocre Texas team that gave up just 254 yards of total Utah offense.
Washington Bowl Grade: A
Final Score: Washington 38, Boise State 7
Line: Washington -3.5, o/u: 48
– Las Vegas Bowl 5 Things That Matter
After a rough season with too many ups and downs, the Huskies were laser-focused in Chris Petersen’s final game. They got up 17-0 at halftime, the defense didn’t allow a score from the Mountain West champ until late in the third quarter, and they were air-tight with no turnovers, three takeaways, and just one penalty.
Washington State Bowl Grade: C-
Final Score: Air Force 31, Washington State 21
Line: Air Force -2.5, o.u: 71.5
– 5 Thoughts on the Cheez-It Bowl
The Cougars got rocked by a Group of Five team. The defense never had an answer for the Air Force running game, the Wazzu offense only controlled the clock for 16:36, and it never had the lead.
