4. Why and when the open dates matter

The Big 12 fires through its schedules and doesn’t mess around. There are no August dates, and there’s just one week off in the 13-week season before the Big 12 Championship.

But there are a few key discrepancies in when those off-weeks occur.

Eight of the ten teams get their break before facing another Big 12 team. Oklahoma and TCU are the ones that don’t, going on the road to face Army and SMU, respectively.

More important is the timing.

Oklahoma’s week off is on October 19th after playing just two games. That means it has to go on a ten-week dash, and make it 11 if it goes back to the Big 12 Championship.

The only other team with the week off that early is TCU, and it gets a light scrimmage of Prairie View A&M before going up the road 40 miles to SMU.

In a perfect world, a team wants its week off in the middle to latter part of the season, and before a big game.

And this year, that’s West Virginia and Kansas.

It’s the only team to get a week off to rest up for Oklahoma, and it’s a home game in early November. The Jayhawks are the only other ones that get a week off as late as Halloween, and that comes before hosting Texas.

More on the off-weeks in the No. 1 part – the Big 12 schedule winners and losers – and the two teams that get royally hosed.
