Why Kansas State Will Win

Kansas State wins if it runs well, controls the clock, and gets inside the 20 on a regular basis. Navy is fantastic at scoring when it gets in the red zone. Kansas State is better.

LSU leads the nation in red zone scoring – coming aways with points 97% of the time – and Navy is third. Kansas State is second. The Wildcats, Midshipmen and Tigers have all failed inside the 20 just twice, but Chris Klieman’s club gets there more.

Navy, again, is incredible at controlling the clock. Again, it holds the ball for 33:15 per game. Kansas State is third in the nation – behind Wisconsin and Utah – controlling the clock for 34:17 per game.

That starts with leading the nation in third down stops, running the ball well enough to be effective at dominating the clock, and by getting great production out of the run defense …

Navy is 9-0 this season when it ran for 300 yards or more, and was 1-2 when it ran for fewer. Oklahoma State – helped by Chuba Hubbard – ran for 373 yards in the win over Kansas State. No one else hit the 300-yard mark.

No one else ran for more than 230 yards.

How do you slow down what Navy does? The back seven can’t miss tackles, and Denzel Goolsby and the rest of the K-State secondary can pop. Five of the team’s top nine tacklers are defensive backs. Against Navy, that’s a positive.

Kansas State doesn’t give up the ball. The offense has only turned it over 13 times, and even when it does make mistakes, it’s been able to overcome them most of the time.

The Wildcats have lost eight fumbles on the year, more than once just one time – three given up in the win over Mississippi State – and lost just two fumbles over the last seven games.

Navy has tightened up, but it’s not above putting the ball on the ground, doing it four times against Notre Dame and 12 times on the season.
