The problem isn’t necessarily that USC decided to keep Clay Helton, it’s that it’s continuing to marry itself to the Mike Leach style of Air Raid gimmick.
It’s a fun offense that puts up lots and lots of yards, but this year, the way USC ran it, there were problems with its quarterbacks getting tagged.
Kedon Slovis was great, and then he was knocked out of the game with a shoulder injury.
The other problem? There’s NO running game to fall back on.
This is USC. It’s Marcus Allen, Charles White, OJ Simpson, Reggie Bush, Student Body Right, and it finished with just 22 rushing yards on 18 carries.
Slovis connected on 22-of-30 passes for 260 yards and two scores, but again, that was just fine when he was on the field and not injured.
Matt Fink came in and hit 12-of-18 passes for 74 yards, but he lost a fumble off a shotgun snap on a short-yardage play, and he threw a pick-six – both plays led to Iowa touchdowns.
USC is supposed to be the team with the speed, but …
