1. What It All Means: Week 14
We’ve got two, maybe three of the final four College Football Playoff teams set.
There’s going to be a Championship Week, but that’s only to see who’ll end up facing the three big monsters out there.
Ohio State is in the College Football Playoff no matter what.
No one has come within double-digits of the Buckeyes, even the one team that kept things relatively close – Penn State – was dominated everyone but on the scoreboard in the 28-17 OSU win a few weeks ago.
The Buckeyes might drop in the final four in the rankings with a loss to Wisconsin, but they’re in. The first 12 games were too strong.
LSU is in the College Football Playoff no matter what.
After annihilating a decent Texas A&M team 50-7, the Tiger resumé is fantastic. If beat Florida, Auburn, and won at Alabama. And yes, at the time, rocking Texas at Texas mattered.
If LSU loses to Georgia, Georgia is in, and LSU is in, too. The first 12 games were too strong.
And Clemson is probably, maybe, potentially in, too.
It keeps getting brought up, but it’s true – there are no impressive wins. However, there are seven victories over teams that are going bowling, and the Tigers took out their rival on the road with a 38-3 performance against South Carolina.
The problem for Clemson is Virginia. Wisconsin will be a highly-ranked opponent for Ohio State to deal with, and Georgia will be No. 4 in the rankings when it takes on LSU. Virginia will be in the top 25, but Clemson can’t lose the ACC Championship and be comfortable.
Utah is playing Oregon in the Pac-12 Championship on Friday night, meaning Oklahoma and Baylor will know what they have to do in the Big 12 Championship on Saturday.
If Utah loses, the Big 12 title game will be a College Football Playoff quarterfinal … unless Georgia beats LSU.
If Utah wins, then the Big 12 champion has to win in a blowout, and then pray for LSU to take out Georgia.
In the end, this hasn’t been the Alabama vs. Clemson Invitational we all thought it might be back in August.
Next week at this time, we’ll have our playoff.
