Week 14 Roundup: 5 Things That Matter, Winners, Losers, Overrated, Underrated

4. The Really Big Thing Was …

Auburn 48, Alabama 45

This actually could be thrown into The Most Overrated Thing Was section, considering Alabama could’ve won this by 30 and that might not have meant anything in the final College Football Playoff puzzle, but …

Auburn just did the CFP committee a whale of a favor.

It still might not be a crisp and clean with no caffeine decision on who the top four teams are, but at least the members in that conference room in Grapevine, Texas, aren’t going to have to fight it out over whether or not Alabama really is one of the four best teams compared to Utah, or Baylor, or Oklahoma.

More than just the game itself, or the win by Auburn, or what this does for the New Year’s Six bowls and the SEC pecking order, this was another moment when the big, bad, Bama bully looked somewhat helpless.

There were losses over the years under Nick Saban, but they were always either in tight battles, or in shootouts that appeared to be aberrations.

Maybe it was a Kick Six that did in the Tide, or a Heisman-winning day by Johnny Football, or a battle against an Ole Miss team that did everything right, or in a playoff thriller against a transcendent player like Deshaun Watson or Ezekiel Elliott.

But over the last 11 months, Alabama went from looking and playing like the greatest team of all-time in the midst of one of the most impressive runs of all-time, to getting blown out, outplayed, and outcoached in the national championship loss to Clemson, ripped up by LSU, and now, hit with a 48-45 loss to Auburn …

Ending with the colossal mistake of getting flagged for an illegal substitution.

There were 13 penalties, two turnovers, two pick-sixes including the epic Butt Pick, and yet Bama dominated the Tigers in so many different ways …

And lost 48-45 to get knocked out of the College Football Playoff chase.
