1. Cal’s good season ends with something great
It might have just been a win in the Redbox Bowl against a mediocre Big Ten team, but for head coach Justin Wilcox and Cal, it represents a nice step forward.
Wilcox just missed going bowling in his first 5-7 season, lost last year’s epic Cheez-It Bowl to go 7-6, and now in Year Three, has a bowl win, an eight-win campaign, and improvement in each of his years and with a whole lot of promise going forward.
The defense continues to be great – of course LB Evan Weaver led the team with nine tackles – but the offense didn’t do enough over the course of the season.
It would’ve probably had been a different story had Chase Garbers not been hurt, but there wasn’t enough of a running game to fall back on, and the defense couldn’t overcome the shaky other side.
Whatever. The Cal Bears got their first bowl win since 2015 and second since beating Miami in the 2008 San Francisco.
