What bowl game will Alabama go to?

We’re now in a new territory for Alabama football, at least in the College Football Playoff era.

For the first time since 2013, Alabama won’t be playing in a bowl for the national title – how will the program respond to just its second relatively meaningless post-season game since 2010?

After the College Football Playoff rankings put the Crimson Tide at 12 – below Auburn at 11 and Penn State at 10 – it’s now going to be hard to make a New Year’s Six bowl, but not impossible.

It’s not going to be the College Football Playoff, but the Tide will still go to a spotlight bowl game as one of the most attractive free agents out there.

Best Bowl Scenario For Alabama

Orange Bowl vs. Virginia. The Sugar Bowl is out with Georgia likely to be in it with a loss to LSU in the SEC Championship, or Florida if Georgia wins. In a perfect world for the Tide, Georgia and LSU both make the College Football Playoff, Florida goes to the Sugar, No. 8 Wisconsin get annihilated by Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship, and somehow, the bowl system decides it would rather have the No. 12 Crimson Tide in the Orange than Auburn.

More realistically, the Cotton Bowl would be the better call.

Georgia goes to the Sugar, Florida goes to the Orange, and Alabama somehow slides ahead of Auburn to get into the Cotton against the top Group of Five champion.

Worst Bowl Scenario For Alabama

VRBO Citrus Bowl vs. Iowa or Minnesota. Wisconsin isn’t all that awful against Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship, and it’s in a New Year’s Six bowl along with Penn State and Florida. Alabama gets squeezed out, Auburn goes to the Outback, and it’s off to Orlando to face a solid Big Ten team.

And The Bowl Alabama Will Go To Is …

ProjectionOutback Bowl vs. Minnesota

They’re still the Crimson Tide, and even though the possibility is there to lose at least ten players who’ll sit out to get ready for the NFL, the bowls are going to want them. Flip a coin on the Outback or the VRBO Citrus. Either way, expect Bama to play in Florida on New Year’s Day.
