Washington State (4-4) vs. Cal (4-4) Game Preview

Why Washington State Will Win

Losers of four of their last five games, the Cougars need to ramp up their offense against a team that doesn’t have the pop or potential to push back too much.

Welcome to Cal.

The Bear defense is a … bear. Sorry. The offense? The line is leaky, the attack is the worst in the Pac-12 averaging fewer than 300 yards per game, and the passing game isn’t working at all.

It wasn’t exactly a high-flying fun show before with Chase Garbers at quarterback. He’s hurt, and the O isn’t doing a thing with Devon Modster and freshman Spencer Brasch getting their turns running the show.

To be fair. they’re not getting a whole lot of time to work behind the leaky line. Utah ate Brasch’s lunch two weeks ago, and Modster hasn’t been able to move the offense that hasn’t scored more than 17 points in any of the last four games.

Washington State’s defense is hardly anything to get excited about, but at least it’s able to get behind the line and generate enough pressure to be a problem.

As long as Anthony Gordon and the offense can find a way to open things up a wee bit and get a few first half touchdowns, this might be over. But …

Why Cal Will Win

The Cal defense continues to fight the good fight.

It’s not getting any help from the offensive side, but it’s still holding its own to get off the field and not allow a whole slew of long drives, and the secondary has been good enough.

For the most part.

It struggled against Utah two weeks ago, but that’s the only time anyone has averaged more than eight yards per pass against this bunch. Wazzu doesn’t throw deep all that often, but it does like to dink, dunk, and hit its midrange passes.

The Cougar O – considering how strong it is winging the ball around – isn’t all that great on third downs, and it has no running game whatsoever to help the cause.

Cal’s D was able to stuff Jacob Eason and the Washington offense, kept Justin Herbert and Oregon in check, and it hadn’t been ripped up by anyone until dealing with a red-hot Ute attack. But …

What’s Going To Happen

Washington State’s offense is a different animal.

It has problems defensively, but Cal really, really doesn’t have the scoring pop to keep up. The Cougars were only held down by Utah, but that’s partly because that Ute O was going off, too.

It won’t be ugly – Cal’s defense will keep this just in check enough to give its offense some opportunities to take over – but Wazzu will have the game in hand after getting up early.
