Stanford (4-4) vs. Colorado (3-6) Game Preview
Why Stanford Will Win
Colorado has completely lost its mojo.
It looked like the offense was going to be a thing after a big first quarter of the season, but it didn’t show up against Oregon and Washington State – at least when it had its chances to make something happen – and the team got its heart stomped on by USC.
The Buffs have scored 14 points or fewer in three of their last four games. That’s just what Stanford needs.
But now the Cardinal offense has its guy back, and now it’s got the O to get going again.
KJ Costello hasn’t been quite right since the opener against Northwestern, but after missing three full games, he came back against Arizona and hit 71% of his passes for 322 yards and three touchdowns and no picks in the 41-31 win.
The Colorado defense doesn’t have the secondary to handle Costello and the Cardinal if the passing attack starts working, and the offense doesn’t have the ability to control the clock.
Stanford is tenth in the nation in time of possession. It likes to grind it out, but now with Costello, it can move the ball.
Why Colorado Will Win
The Stanford defense is just okay.
The secondary just started to figure out that the whole picking off passes thing is sort of fun, and it’s allowed 200 yards or more in every game but the opener against Northwestern and the 196-yard day against UCLA.
At 4-6, on a five-game losing streak, and with Washington and Utah coming up next, this is the time to air it out.
Steven Montez hasn’t been bad, but he hasn’t been consistent. He’s too good and the receiving corps is too strong to not hit 200 yards passing in three of the last four games.
The offensive line is good enough to give him time to work, and the Cardinal pass rush isn’t good enough to take over the game.
The Stanford offense is as flaky as they come – it’s possible it falls very, very flat on the road.

What’s Going To Happen
Stanford has quietly been okay. The home loss to UCLA was weird, but Colorado just went through a loss to Chip Kelly’s team, too.
Costello is the difference-maker. He’s the NFL-caliber quarterback Montez was supposed to be. He’ll be sharp when the offense needs him to be, and Montez won’t be consistent enough when he needs to come up with a big late drive.
