South Carolina (4-5) vs. Appalachian State (7-1) Game Preview
Why Appalachian State Will Win
The Mountaineers can keep the chains moving. The Gamecocks can’t.
There were a few issues on third downs over the last few weeks, but overall, ASU is sharp and occasionally dominant when it comes to controlling the game and the clock. The offense connects on 49% of its third down chances, while South Carolina only converts 35% of the time.
Why does that really matter?
South Carolina doesn’t have a downfield passing game. It’s only averaging ten yards per completion and has one of the nation’s least-efficient attacks. It has to dink-and-dunk a bit to get into manageable third down situations, and ASU is eighth in the nation in pass defense and is fantastic at getting off the field.
This is a sound Mountaineer team that doesn’t turn the ball over, brings a balanced attack, and it scores in waves.
So how did it lose to Georgia Southern? This team has a problem with the triple option – losing to the Eagles over the last few years – but that’s not the Gamecock offense.
Why South Carolina Will Win
South Carolina is going to care.
This isn’t your normal late season cupcake game to pad the win total. The Gamecocks are 4-5 and have to win two of their last three to become bowl eligible. With Texas A&M and Clemson to close, this is a must win.
The defensive front should be able to take over the game. The USC offense might not be explosive, and it might not be able to put up yards and points in chunks, but the other side of the ball is great against the run – it has only allowed four touchdowns so far – and it’s good enough to get behind the line from time to time.
The Appalachian State offensive line is good, but it hasn’t faced a front like this one.
The Gamecock running game has to take over early on. It’s been able to hit 200 yards in three of the last five games – including against Florida – and it should be able hammer away. Commit to the run, and ASU will start to buckle.
The Mountaineer run D has only allowed more than 200 yards twice, but South Carolina has to keep pounding.

What’s Going To Happen
Can Appalachian State capitalize on its chances? South Carolina’s offense doesn’t score enough to run away with this, and the ASU defense is strong enough to hang on in key moments.
How was it able to beat North Carolina? Takeaways. The Tar Heels controlled most of the game and moved the ball just fine, but the three giveaways were their undoing.
South Carolina doesn’t turn the ball over, at least lately.
The team has tightened up in a big way with just three giveaways in the last five games. ASU isn’t going to get the takeaways it needs to win this.
