Oklahoma (7-1) vs. Iowa State (5-3) Game Preview
Why Iowa State Will Win
Brock Purdy and the passing game continue to go off.
The three interceptions against Oklahoma State were a problem – a huge part of the loss – but Purdy also threw for 382 yards with the Cyclone midrange passing attack.
The Oklahoma secondary has been decent so far – especially compared to last season – but it can have problems against the more accurate, efficient passers. It held Sam Ehlinger in check, and it stopped D’Eriq King back when he was a Houston Cougar, but Purdy is a mortal lock for at least 65% no matter who he’s going against.
The Cyclone offensive line is doing a nice job of making the O go, the attack is strong at controlling the tempo for stretches, and best of all …
Iowa State leads the Big 12 against the run. The linebacking corps is swarming all over everything.
Oklahoma State’s Chuba Hubbard will run for 2,000 yards this season. The 116 yards against Iowa State were his fewest against any FCS team. ULM is the only team to hit the Cyclones for over 200 rushing yards – and it lost by 52. But …
– “Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released
Why Oklahoma Will Win
ULM QB Caleb Evans was able to run for close to 100 yards. Iowa State hasn’t faced a whole slew of running quarterbacks so far, and Jalen Hurts is a mortal lock to finish the season with 1,000 yards.
He’s not just a runner to run – he’s taking off when things aren’t quite there in the passing game down the field. When he has his openings. he’s off, running for more than 50 yards against every FBS team.
The OU defense might have had problems against Kansas State QB Skylar Thompson, but it’s been terrific at getting behind the line. Iowa State’s running game isn’t enough to worry about, and the OU pass rush should be strong enough to bother Purdy and make him work a little bit.
With two weeks off to sit and stew after the loss to Kansas State, and with a No. 9 ranking in the first College Football Playoff rankings, here comes the offense. Hurts has been close to flawless so far – hitting 74% of his passes with 21 touchdowns and three picks, helped by his devastating receiving corps.
Purdy is fantastic, Hurts is better.

What’s Going To Happen
This is the moment to see just how good Oklahoma really is.
The Sooners have been a whole lot of fun, but they haven’t beaten anyone but Texas, and even that’s not that big a deal at the moment. There’s a real shot they’ve beaten just one team that’s going bowling, and next week is the showdown at Baylor.
If they’re the real deal, they need to show it off to get the committee to start to care again.
It’ll take a shootout to do it.
Oklahoma will put up the big day it needs, but Purdy and the Cyclones will keep pressing to make this a blast.
