Illinois (5-4) vs. Michigan State (4-4) Game Preview
Why Illinois Will Win
The defense has stepped up its game in a big, big way over the last three games.
It was able to slow down Wisconsin just enough to stay alive, and shut down Purdue in bad weather, and stopping Rutgers is stopping Rutgers, but there’s positive momentum happening here unlike everything that’s happening on the other side.
Michigan State was supposed to be a player this year. The offense was supposed to be a whole lot stronger – and it was, before it scored 17 points over the last three games – but the defense has shockingly gone bye-bye.
And now, not having heart-and-soul LB Joe Bachie – suspended for using a banned substance – only adds to the meltdown.
The Illinois defensive front continues to be active, Michigan State doesn’t have any running game, and this could be a case of getting some positive momentum going early on one side of the ball, and hoping it carries over to the other, but …
Why Michigan State Will Win
Michigan State is playing an offense that fits what it needs and likes to do.

Michigan State couldn’t handle getting hammered on by Wisconsin from jump street. It couldn’t get back in the game after Penn State took control in the bad weather in East Lansing, and it had no prayer against Ohio State’s speed and athleticism.
Illinois has completed 18-of-39 passes over the last three games. The Spartans aren’t going to worry about the air show.
There’s also a rallying thing that might be happening here.
Michigan State has gone through a month of problems, and it has Michigan up next. This is the type of program and team that should be able to rise up and rally in rough times, and …

What’s Going To Happen
Remember, Michigan State might be on a bad run, but it lost at Ohio State, at Wisconsin, and to Penn State. That’s the No. 1, 4, and 13 teams, respectively, according to the first College Football Playoff rankings.
The team is still pretty good.
With two weeks off, the defense will rise up and rock the mediocre Illini offense, and the offensive side will get a solid day out of Brian Lewerke to keep everything working.
There won’t be any fireworks, but the Spartans will pull up out of the nosedive before next week’s trip to Michigan.
