Big Ten Quick Thoughts, Takes On Every Game: Week 13. Ohio State Wins Big Ten East

By

Minnesota 38, Northwestern 22

Survive and advance. Minnesota got up 21-0 and could cruise from there, but considering Tanner Morgan was a question mark coming into the game after suffering a concussion against Iowa, and with Northwestern playing with absolutely nothing to lose in the final home game of the year, just win and go home. Don’t worry about how it looked.

Morgan was solid – completing 15-of-23 passes for 211 yards and four scores with a pick – the running game averaged over five yards per pop, and Rashod Bateman caught seven passes for 78 yards and three scores. Tyler Johnson came up with 125 yards and a score on seven grabs.

Northwestern only gained 222 yards of total offense, but at least the team went on a few drives and came up with 22 points – that’s something against a real team for this Wildcat O. Andrew Marty completed 8-of-10 passes for 95 yards and a score, and he ran or 52 yards and two touchdowns.

The NU offense, though, was stuffed overall until it was way too late. Minnesota all but ended this in the second quarter. The pain and suffering of the Wildcat season ends next week against Illinois.

Now it’s up to Minnesota to beat Wisconsin to get to the Big Ten Championship – it has its dream shot right there for the taking. Beat the Badgers, go 11-1, and the Gophers will at least have the Rose Bowl all but locked in, and they’ll get their cut at the Buckeyes for a shot at the College Football Playoff.
