Wisconsin (6-0) vs. Illinois (2-4) Game Preview
Why Illinois Will Win
Is there a chance Wisconsin isn’t quite as sharp or as strong away from Camp Randall?
It started out the season at USF – and won 49-0 – but it hasn’t had to leave Madison ever since. Going to Champaign isn’t like going to the moon, but the Badgers are being taken out of their comfort zone.
Illinois hasn’t been able to come up with wins – losing four straight including to Eastern Michigan – but it’s been able to battle with a good pass rush, lots of takeaways, and just enough of an offense to make things interesting.
There’s no consistency to the O, but the Illini stayed with Minnesota for a half, made Michigan sweat in the third quarter, and lost to Nebraska and EMU by a total of seven points.
To go all cliché – there’s nothing to lose here. The team is going to let it rip, and it has the ability to be +3 in turnover margin to make this a wee bit of a battle.
Why Wisconsin Will Win
Illinois will never have the ball.
The Illini passing game is wildly inefficient, the running game disappears way too often, and the O screws itself up with way too many penalties. But mostly, the offense doesn’t stay on the field, trying to play with a little tempo while also being way too ineffective.
That’s part of the reason why Illinois is last in the Big Ten in time of possession, keeping the ball for just over 27 minutes per game. Wisconsin is No. 1 in college football at controlling the clock – it might have its offense on the field for 40 minutes.
There’s nothing the Badgers aren’t doing right at the moment. They’re starting out hot, they’re not making mistakes, and they’re playing their controlled style and owning moment after moment.
Illinois just isn’t good enough to hold up for a full 60 minutes, especially on the offensive line that’s about to get hit very, very hard.

What’s Going To Happen
Illinois really is good at battling, and it doesn’t quit, but it doesn’t have the horses.
It doesn’t have the lines to handle Wisconsin’s style, but it’ll bother QB Jack Coan just enough to keep him under pressure to keep him from being as comfortable as he was against Michigan State.
Jonathan Taylor has yet to score against the Illini, and was held to just 73 yards the last time Wisconsin headed to the middle of Illinois. He’ll get at least two touchdowns this time around.
It won’t be a fifth shutout in seven games for the Badgers, but they won’t have to work too hard after the first quarter.
