Washington (4-2) vs. Arizona (4-1) Game Preview

Why Washington Will Win

Okay, Jacob Eason, it’s time to go off.

The Washington style should still work the rest of the way, but it’s coming off a game when it got beaten up by the stall ball game of Stanford to go along with the slow-and-go loss to Cal earlier in the year. That’s not going to be what Arizona is.

Now it’s time to play a team that seems to fit what the Huskies like to deal with.

What did they do the week after losing to Cal? They rocked Hawaii’s world with a wipeout win – the same Hawaii team that beat Arizona to start the season.

The Wildcats are playing well, but they’re also getting ripped up by everyone’s passing attack. UCLA is the only team to not hit the 300-yard mark against the Arizona secondary, and it put up over 200 yards, too.

Eason struggled against Stanford – hitting 44% of his passes with nothing happening down the field. As long as Eason is making his downfield throws, and as long as the offense is coming up with big games with the passing game, it’ll be fine.

Washington is 4-0 this year when Eason averaged over six yards per throw. It’s 0-2 when he’s averaging fewer.

Arizona is allowing over seven yards per throw.

Why Arizona Will Win

Khalil Tate has been brilliant.

He missed the UCLA game with a hamstring problem, and he was questionable against Colorado, and then he came out and threw for over 400 yards and three scores in the 35-30 win over the Buffs.

Yes, the Arizona defense is having its issues, but it’s picking off passes – eight came in the first three games – it’s 15th in the nation in turnover margin, and it’s managing to come up with just enough key stops at the right times to survive.

The Cats aren’t ripping anyone apart – all four games against FBS teams were tight – but give them credit for winning the tight battles. That was a problem for Arizona over the last few years, and now because of Tate on one side, and  with a run defense that’s just good enough to not get gauged.

The Wildcats might have problems with everyone’s air show, but they have no problems in back-and-forth games. They’re not going to want to grind it out.

What’s Going To Happen

This is the big test for both sides. Washington really is good enough to be in the mix for the Pac-12 title, but there can’t be a slip the rest of the way.

Arizona still has Utah and Arizona State to deal with, but win this, and it’s right in the Pac-12 championship hunt and will start to get some national attention.

Washington should wake up after its strange loss against Stanford, and it’ll pull this off by being stronger up front. Eason will throw for over 300 yards, and the defense will keep Tate from being Tate.

The Huskies aren’t playing that same dud of a game twice in a row.
