Virginia (5-2) vs. Louisville (4-3) Game Preview

Why Virginia Will Win

Now that’s the Virginia team that’s supposed to be the No. 2 team in the conference, the biggest threat to win the Coastal, and if everything breaks right, a possible challenger to beat Clemson for the ACC title.

The Cavaliers rocked a good Duke team 48-14 last week to pull up after losing two straight. They’re dominating the time of possession battle, the defense is getting into the backfield on a regular basis, and the third down D is the best in the ACC.

It’s taking the stress off of Bryce Perkins and the offense when the defense is taking the ball away five times like it did against the Blue Devils.

Louisville is playing well, and the offense has been dangerous down the field, but the line isn’t doing enough to get keep its guys upright. The Cardinal defense gets into too many shootouts, and the secondary is an issue, but it comes down to stopping the pass rush and the O line can’t do that.

Why Louisville Will Win

Blow off the loss to Clemson – the Tigers have stepped up their game now. The Louisville offense has been good, explosive, and entertaining. It can stretch the field to bother the Virginia defensive backs all game long, and the passes are going to keep on coming.

Even with the Cardinals leading the ACC in yards per completion, they’re still doing a nice job of controlling the clock and the tempo. If needed, they can keep the offense on the field and grind a wee bit, and when it’s necessary, they’ve got the efficient passing attack to do what’s needed.

Virginia’s offense is fine, but the running game is inconsistent, it’s too reliant on Bryce Perkins, and the offensive line has been hit-or-miss. Even with the five takeaways against Duke, the Cavs are having problems with turnover margin, and the Cardinals can use all the help they can get.

What’s Going To Happen

Really? Just when it seems like Virginia is about to take over the Coastal and run away with it, it’s going to lose to a dangerous Louisville team that’s pushing hard for a bowl game?

No, but it’s not going to be easy.

The Cavalier defense will keep the UofL offense down just a wee bit, but this will be the Perkins game. He’ll come up with well over 300 yards of total offense as the Virginia O keeps up the pace in – for what counts for one for the Cavs – a relative shootout.

It’ll be close, but Virginia will pull away late.
