Virginia (4-2) vs. Duke (4-2) Game Preview
Why Virginia Will Win
What happened to the Duke passing game?
Just when it seemed like it was about to take off after two huge games, it went up against decent teams with decent defenses, and it started to sputter.
It was hardly awful in the blowout win over Virginia Tech, but it’s been a struggle over the last two weeks against Pitt and Georgia Tech with Quentin Harris hitting just 29-of-63 passes for 341 yards and a touchdown with two picks.
The Panther D didn’t all anything deep, and Georgia Tech was able to lock down just enough to force the Blue Devil running game win it.
Virginia’s secondary has been solid over the last two weeks – the two losses – and the run defense remains among the best in the country. The Cavaliers allowed 157 rushing yards and four scores to Notre Dame a few weeks ago, and hasn’t given up more than 100 yards to anyone else.
Why Duke Will Win
What’s Virginia’s problem? Where has it all gone wrong over the last two weeks?
It’s simple. The offensive line has stopped playing well.
Dealing with Notre Dame and Miami will do that, but the Cavaliers have to quickly pivot and adjust to decent pass rushes. The Irish dominated in the second half against Virginia and finished with eight sacks, and last week Miami was dominated when it had to be with five sacks.
The timing now is just off. QB Bryce Perkins is still putting up decent yards, but the offense hasn’t been nearly as productive or as efficient as it was over the first four games.
The Blue Devils have just enough of a pass rush to be a problem, and the defense has is getting enough production out of the linebackers to keep Perkins from doing much on the move.

What’s Going To Happen
Virginia is about to get its groove back.
Duke is a good, tough team that’s able to do a little bit of everything right, but it doesn’t have Miami’s pass rush and it doesn’t have the talent to do what Notre Dame pulled off in South Bend.
The Cavalier defense won’t get to Harris like it might want to, but it’l hold tough against the midrange passing game. Perkins and the offense will start scoring again.
Virginia is 4-0 when scoring 28 points or more, and 0-2 when it doesn’t. Duke is 4-0 when it scored 40 points or more, and 0-2 when it doesn’t. The former is more likely than the later.
