Utah (7-1) vs. Washington (5-3) Game Preview
Why Utah Will Win
The Ute defense is humming.
It had one of game against the USC passing game, and it has allowed 23 points total in the four games ever since and nothing more than a touchdown in any of the last three.
The defensive line that fell off the national map after the loss to the Trojans was great then, and it’s every bit as good as any in America, leading the nation against the run while living behind the line.
No one’s doing much of anything on third downs on this group, and Washington isn’t doing much of anything on third downs. Moving the chains and getting that Ute D off the field is a must, and Washington has to be able to do that from the start.
Wisconsin leads the nation in time of possession. Thanks to its defense and the Pac-12’s best running game that’s averaging close to 220 yards per game, Utah is second.
Why Washington Will Win
Yeah, the Utah defense is the real deal. It’s tough, it’s relentless, and it’s about to go up against the best offensive line it’s had to deal with all year.
For all the amazing things the Utah defensive line does, it doesn’t generate a whole ton of sacks. Give Jacob Eason time, and he’ll stretch the field and hit the big play.
Utah has faced two teams that can throw. It stalled Washington State, and it got burned by Matt Fink and the Trojan passing game that bombed away for close to 12 yards per pass. That has to be what Eason does.
The Dawgs have a strange mix of offensive things happening. They’re wildly inconsistent, but they have that good downfield passing game and can power away with the ground attack when it gets into a lather.
However, the O doesn’t turn the ball over enough to matter, the team doesn’t get hit by a slew of bad penalties, and it’s Washington – it can play a little bit of defense, too.

What’s Going To Happen
All the parts are working like they’re supposed to at the moment for the Utes, but can this very good Washington team really lose three of its last four and the last two at home?
It’s not exactly going to be revenge for losing last year’s Pac-12 Championship, but the Utah defense will get past allowing a few big plays plays and early scores to lock down in the second half. It’ll be a grind for the Ute O, but the steady balance will be just enough to get out of Seattle with a tough, methodical win.
